In the first of two weeks of a new drug that may have a lower risk of heart problems, an Australian pharmacist has warned of heart problems that are the subject of a study suggesting that patients on sildenafil (Viagra) who took the medicine had an increased risk of developing the heart problems that are seen in older patients.
The drug, sold as Revatio but now sold as Viagra Connect, is the first medication to be prescribed to patients at a lower dosage to prevent the development of heart problems, which are seen in older patients.
The study was presented at the British Heart Foundation Scientific Sessions in London on Tuesday at a meeting of the British Heart Foundation in London. The group looked at the incidence of heart problems and other cardiovascular problems in patients taking sildenafil (Viagra) in comparison with those on placebo (an older drug used to treat erectile dysfunction).
A total of 1,600 patients were analysed over the first two weeks of the trial, which was run between March and May this year.
About 8.3 per cent of the patients were on sildenafil (Viagra) when they first started taking the medicine. The study found that the heart problems were more common in patients taking the drug, with some developing their own problems. The increased risk of heart problems with the sildenafil drug was seen in older patients, who are at high risk of developing heart problems in the general population.
Dr Nic Wilson, a cardiologist at the University of Glasgow, said the study was important because patients who are older may be more likely to develop heart problems.
"It is important to monitor these patients and inform their doctors if they do develop any heart problems," said Dr Wilson.
He added: "We are still in a long way of using sildenafil for the treatment of patients with cardiovascular problems who are older. But this new study is a huge step in that direction, and it shows that the risk of developing the heart problems associated with sildenafil is very low."
The study was funded by Pfizer, the maker of Viagra. Viagra was the first drug to be approved in the UK by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998.
The Pfizer drug was designed to treat erectile dysfunction and had only been available since 2003.

Viagra Connect was launched as a treatment for men with erectile dysfunction, which affects around half of men between the ages of 40 and 70.
The drug was developed by Eli Lilly and Co, maker of Viagra, and is the only medication licensed for treatment of ED.
VIDEOThe drug's label warns patients that the risk of heart problems is greater in older patients who are at high risk of developing the disease, and are taking lower doses of sildenafil than those who have had no heart problems for a long time.
The trial was run between March and May last year, and included a total of 5,400 patients.
The drug was found to be slightly more likely to be associated with heart attacks and strokes in older patients when compared with younger patients.
Dr Wilson said the results were good news for Pfizer, which had launched the drug in Europe in 1999.
But he said the new study should not be seen as a major public health concern.
He added that patients on the new drug should be advised to check with their doctor first, and should also inform their doctor if they are taking any of the medications they are currently taking.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the company had no plans to withdraw the drug, but had been trying to make its products as well.
He said the drug's label was clear and did not seem to be causing the problems.
He added that the trial was not a "global event," but a small trial at a European drug trial was needed to show if the drug was safe.
Dr Wilson said that the new study was important because it showed that older patients who are at high risk of developing heart problems in the general population were more likely to develop heart problems.
